Eyes on 2018 as 3rd House Republican Says He'll Retire

A second-term Republican congressman announced Monday he would not run for re-election next year, becoming the third targeted GOP member in the past week to retire as the party faces a potentially difficult fight to maintain its majority in 2018.

The decision by Rep. Dave Trott of Michigan (pictured) followed retirement announcements last week by Reps. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania and Dave Reichert of Washington, three members Democrats planned to try to unseat next year. Though all would have been difficult incumbents to defeat, the districts are likely to be much more competitive for Democrats as open races. Several nonpartisan handicappers immediately switched Trott’s district to a “tossup” after his announcement.

Though the trio of retirements hasn’t invited panic among Republicans, it could be a warning sign of a tough political environment facing GOP lawmakers next year. On average, the party in power tends to lose seats in a president’s first midterm election, and Republicans worry that struggling to accomplish their agenda on Capitol Hill and the tumult of President Trump’s first year leave them vulnerable in 2018.

They would have absolutely no reason to worry about it if they would simply do what they need to do.

They all, every last one of them (except Susan Collins), ran claiming they intended to repeal Obamacare. The words "and replace" were nowhere in there, though they often mentioned they wanted to devise a plan to cover the people who can't be otherwise covered. But that is a separate issue. The core is repeal. But they can't even do that.

Trump stressed a wall. Over and over and over again. That's one of the biggest reasons he was elected. Yet the people who control the entire legislature fight against it, leak to the fake media that there's no chance of it, blast Trump for trying to do it, etc. No rational reasons given because they don't have any. Their only reason - that the press will talk bad about them - isn't rational at all. They don't even want to fund the fence that's already been legislated and never funded after the first year.

There's no way a budget will be done on time. There's no way one will be done by the end of the year. They blasted Democrats over and over, and accused Obama of making it impossible (all true). But now they have everything and still can't do it.

I expect they will do something on tax cuts. They'll probably push it off to next year so they can brag about it at election time. But I'm also betting it isn't much more than a shell of what Trump proposed. I'm not saying they need to pass exactly what he sends them. But it needs to be a lot more than the token I'm betting they'll pass.

If they lose, it will be 100% their own doing.

The American Dream is to be Donald Trump.
