Everyone is going to have a different opinion for various reasons and, you'll get the usual mix of thumbs up and scare stories.
Here's a top ten list (I'm sure there are more lists available)

Personally I use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes free and don't have any problems. I've never paid for any security software.
    Some more readind here.

I use eset nod32 the paid version. I got it at Best Buy and installed it from the disc over a year ago. I've just renewed it online for $29 and since I've been using it I haven't had a major infection on my desktop. I don't have it on my laptop and that's where I got the Zeus virus. There I downloaded the eset free online scan and it got rid of the Zeus infection so there ya go... I really like eset, it's been good for me. I can't stand Avira or Avast free versions, all they try and do is sell you more stuff, and they take out very little. You always get a notice, that there are more issues with your computer and for only a 1.99 a month they will take care of it for a year. What a load of crap.....

I have been using Avast free version for a long time.
    Works great for me.

I've been using linux for about 20 years. It hasn't failed me yet.

I did think I got rooted once. But that turned out to be an untested update from one of the programs I had installed. Removed that and the problem vanished.
